Situated on the shores of glacier-fed Skilak Lake and accessible only by boat, Kenai Backcountry Lodge and its surrounding cabins offer an unparalleled wilderness setting, tucked perfectly into the forest surrounding the lake.
The main lodge, originally built in the 1930s as a remote hunting lodge, was lovingly restored and renovated to preserve its historic character: a rustically elegant lounge and dining room is heated by a wood stove, where guests enjoy delicious homemade food surrounded by a relaxing ambience.
The lodge and surrounding grounds also feature a wood-fired sauna, a canopy-covered ping-pong table, lakeside chairs and campfire area, and a screened-in gazebo surrounded by trees (perfect for unwinding in the afternoon with a good book!).
While these communal areas are perfect for visitors to come together and share stories from their day of hiking and exploring surrounding Kenai National Wildlife Refuge and Chugach National Forest, the guest cabins allow for private time to relax in nature.
The nine guest cabins are tucked into the surrounding forest near the main lodge and connected via gravel pathways and elevated wood boardwalks; this design was crafted with care to preserve the forest floor and minimize the lodge’s footprint.
Each of the cozy cabins has lodge-style ambience and furnishings. Each cabin has at least two beds with warm, cozy linens, blankets and pillows, as well as on-demand heat, propane lighting and a private en suite bathroom. Guests love the private porches attached to each cabin, complete with rocking chairs.
