Essential Requirements for all Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge Positions:

  • Cheerful and enthusiastic attitude during long days in a sometimes cramped workspace or inclement weather.
  • Possess the ability to work within a team structure and in a flexible manner to accomplish a variety of tasks including: food preparation, packing, housekeeping, light maintenance and guest service.
  • All positions have dishwashing duties and community chores. Please note: all dishwashing at this lodge is done by hand using a three-step method.
  • Ability to live and work in a communal, camp-like atmosphere.
Seasonal Management

Additional Essential Requirements for Management Positions:

These management positions demand a high level of organization, leadership, attention to detail and exemplary customer service skills. Essentially, it is a jack of all trades. Salary DOE. Applicant must be available April 1 – September 15th. The month of April will typically be remote work and will only be part time.


Seasonal KFGL Lodge Manager

The Seasonal Lodge Manager will coordinate all aspects of Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge. These positions will typically work a 40-hour week but must be flexible to work more especially during the training period of May and early June. Day-to-day schedule may fluctuate depending on arrivals and guest occupancy at the lodge. These dynamic positions require experience in staff leadership and supervision, program logistics and scheduling, general maintenance skills, experience running a backcountry lodge, experience with boat operation and maintenance, and Alaska natural history interpretation.

Duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Greeting guests upon arrival at lodge
  • Overseeing management of hospitality and maintenance staff
  • Organizing continual maintenance and construction projects
  • Managing staff schedules
  • Problem solving unique remote lodge logistics
  • Ensuring daily activities are booked and guide staff are available
  • Being capable of performing any of the lodge duties from hospitality to guiding to cooking with a positive team outlook
  • Competent with computers and Windows operating system; working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Suite
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage, train and schedule guide, hospitality and maintenance staff while providing constructive feedback
  • Ability to multitask and problem solve under time restraints
  • Ability to live and work in a communal, camp-like atmosphere
  • Affinity for natural history and interest in expanding knowledge of ecotourism, Alaska and Alaska tourism experience

Program Manager

The Program Manager oversees the daily scheduling and logistics of guided hikes, kayaking and canoeing trips based from the lodge. The Program Manager will lead the guide department training, maintain guide gear, and keep and maintain meticulous records for National Park Permitting. The position requires oversight and adherence to lodge risk management and makes guided trip decisions based upon current and forecasted weather conditions. The Program Manager must have a current Wilderness First Responder Certification. Previous natural history interpretation, guiding and leadership experience preferred. Alaska experience a plus.

Duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Direct supervision of guide department
  • Carrying out an informative and safe pre-season training program
  • Using weather resources, tide charts, and conditions reports to come up with safe and enjoyable programing for the next day and flexibility in adjusting trips based on changing conditions in a dynamic environment
  • Leading daily guide meetings
  • Being available for MOD shifts at night to help close down the lodge
  • Being available to guide any of our trips based on scheduling needs
  • Ensuring proper use and maintenance of boats/gear
Culinary Staff

Additional Requirements for Culinary Staff:

Ability to work within a team structure and also independently to provide delicious and varied meals to our guests and staff. Our kitchen team is vitally important and sets the tone for our whole operation. We strive to hire competent and skilled staff who prepare food with love and curate a fun, inviting, and professional kitchen environment. 

  • Knowledge of allergens and specialty diets is required
  • Food safety knowledge and certifications are required
  • Knowledge of cooking techniques for proteins, vegetables, starches, side dishes, soups, and salads
  • Knowledge of baking techniques for homemade breads, pastries, cakes, muffins, and cookies
  • Alaska Food Workers Card Required

Kitchen Manager

Provides support, supervision and management to the kitchen staff and servers. This position in conjunction with the Lead Cook takes leadership of the Kitchen and has oversight and training involvement with the assist cook, prep cook, breakfast cook, and service staff. Ensures a well stocked and clean workspace to produce high quality and delicious food for guests and staff. This position takes the lead on dinner 3 times per week and also does the bulk of food inventory/ordering/tracking. The 3 course dinner includes an appetizer, a main course with salad/bread, and dessert and may be family style or plated.


Lead Cook

This position takes leadership of the dinner shift and has oversight and training involvement of the assist cook, prep cook, and dinner service staff. Main responsibilities include: menu planning; guest and staff dinner preparation; and supervision of kitchen employees. Works with Kitchen Manager to address both guest and staff dietary needs, create ordering and inventory lists,  and ensures quality control and recipe standardization. Generally takes the lead on 4-5 dinners per week. The 3 course dinner includes an appetizer, a main course with salad/bread, and dessert and may be family style or plated.


Breakfast Cook

Provides consistently delicious and on schedule breakfasts and lunches for all lodge guests. Is a punctual, reliable, and accountable individual who sets a positive tone for the day for both guests and staff. Breakfast is a high quality hot & continental buffet including homemade pastries and baked goods. Lunch is a high quality buffet including homemade soups, salads and occasionally packed lunches for guided trips.


Assist Cook

This position will work alongside the KFGL Lead Cook or Kitchen Manager in preparing and presenting a hearty, delicious 3-course meal each night. They will also support the Lead Cook in preparing tasty and varied staff dinners. The 3 course dinner includes an appetizer, a main course with salad/ bread, and dessert and may be family style or plated.


Swing Cook/Hospitality

The Swing position has a combination of kitchen duties as well as hospitality work. Typically 2-3 days a week will be spent as a prep cook and 2-3 days will be spent doing the varied hospitality work of cleaning, serving, transporting luggage, or helping with various other projects. This is a great position for someone wanting to expand their skills in the kitchen or someone who likes a lot of variety in their day to day work.

Hospitality Staff

Our hospitality staff is the backbone of our guest experience. Whether cleaning cabins or serving dinner, we consider our work as an opportunity to demonstrate care for our guests and each other. This position is responsible for a variety of day-to-day guest service tasks and will support all other hospitality positions. This includes cabin cleaning, dinner service, dishwashing, bartending, transporting luggage, and cleaning of common areas. Must be organized, personable and have a great attitude and teamwork ethic. 

Responsibilities:

  • Housekeeping: Cleaning cabins, laundering, sanitation, restocking supplies
  • Meal service: serving guests food and beverages, knowledge of menu, bussing tables, dishwashing, restocking supplies, etc. 
  • Bartending: beer and wine only, stocking the wood stove, and maintaining appetizers 
  • Cleaning of the main lodge and common areas
  • Luggage Transportation: Using our off-road vehicles to transport luggage/supplies to our landing craft to be loaded/unloaded
  • Camp Chores: Restocking firewood, trail work, light maintenance and more 
Maintenance

Maintenance

Works as part of a maintenance team and with lodge management to provide all of the maintenance needs for the Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge including but not limited to – plumbing and electrical for independent power and water sources, opening and winterizing procedures as well as working to improve and maintain existing systems and ensure the proper operation of equipment, tools, and vehicles. 

Responsibilities:

  • To assist in all opening and closedown maintenance projects including work with: Generators, water pumps, macerator pumps, holding tanks/lift stations, grease traps, fresh water storage, propane heaters, walk in refrigerator and freezers, stoves, laundry systems, hot water heaters, satellites, hood fan, chimney, off road vehicles, outboards, and heavy machinery
  • Track and report maintenance work in logs and online resources
  • Ensure decks, roofs, cabins, and lodge facilities are in working order and have not been damaged over the winter
  • Provide routine oil and filter changes on vehicles and generators
  • Manage, organize and keep clean various storage areas and the maintenance workshop
  • Obtaining and processing wood for our wood stoves and sauna
  • Point person for response boat and outboard maintenance 
  • Routine checks of water levels on our battery bank
  • Management of propane field and propane transportation
  • Assist in ensuring trash and recycling systems are functioning
  • Point person on water systems testing/dosing/reporting for proper DEC compliance
  • Daily generator/battery bank supervision to ensure we are maximizing efficiency 
  • Basic landscaping, road maintenance, staining, and carpentry duties
Guiding and Outdoor Leadership

Natural History Guide

Leads safe and informative hiking, canoeing and sea kayaking trips for guests visiting Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge (KFGL). Also supports AWA Trip Leaders with responsibilities of AWA trips while they are at KFGL. Responsible for developing and presenting evening programs for guests. Must have interpretation background, extensive experience in sea kayaking, canoeing and professional guiding experience. Previous Alaska experience preferred. Wilderness First Responder or higher is required. Paid training includes the ACA Level 3 Coastal Kayak Instructor Certificate.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct professional and informative half day and full day trips in a dynamic environment while ensuring guest safety and comfort 
  • Participate in daily guide meetings and assist guide team in preparing boats and gear
  • Independent preparation and presentation of an evening program to routinely share with guests.
  • Continual learning about local flora, fauna, and natural history
  • Adherence to safety protocols
  • Kayak, canoe, and gear maintenance
  • Frequently helping to load and unload boats with guest luggage and lodge supplies. 
  • Serving dinner or presenting to guests at a minimum of once per work week to assist hospitality and reach maximum synergy of operations.
  • Basic trail maintenance and facilities upkeep
